Helen responds to 4 questions:

1. What's the essence of your role?

  • I’m the GM of DBCT Management which is an events and media company.  We currently have two expos: NZ Job Expo and Funky Baby Expo.  I have a very cool and groovy tight knit team of 6 who mostly live up here in the winterless North. We work in a fabulous old kauri villa only 10 minutes away from Mangawhai Heads and TiAri Beach – it’s not uncommon for the team to catch a wave in a lunch hour or pop down to the Smashed Pipi for a G&T after work – Nice.
  • My typical day starts at the local Italian cafe with a flat white and a down load with the Director of what our busy day entails.  An expo business is a lot of hard work and long hours and so we like to take the time to get our mornings perfect and set up the day to be a little beautie.
  • I do commute around the country visiting our exhibitors quite a lot, more so right now as our event is only weeks away but I love it.  I get enjoy busy cities and more importantly - shops and then come back to our quiet little town where everybody knows my name and the beaches are stunning.

2. Tell us more about the history behind the NZ Job Expo and the inside story around the upcoming Auckland event

  • The NZ Job Expo team all started with recruitment expos in the UK: London and Manchester – helping to solve the skill shortages in New Zealand and Australia by tapping in to skilled brits who were looking to work and play Downunder. Now that we are all getting a little, how shall I say it.... mellow, we no longer wanted to do the long haul up to the UK and so NZ Job Expo was born.
  • The up and coming NZ Job Expo in Auckland is only 5 weeks away (18th & 19th July) and so our office is humming with the excitement of the event and last minute details.

3.  What does Recruitment 2.0 mean to you? What does an expo offer that technology may not?

  • For me, networking and the technology that goes with it is paramount, specifically as I don’t live in a major city. It’s all about lap tops and mobile phones in our business otherwise I would be in the car or flying around New Zealand at every given moment.
  • Recruitment 2.0 has been a fantastic hub for me to keep in touch with people who live far away, saving time and money.
  • An expo will offer you the chance to get face to face with all of these people in one place and at one time – something that would literally take months to do if you were to visit each of these exhibitors one by one.

4. With the current economic climate, are you surprised companies want to exhibit at an expo?

  • At this stage and with 5 weeks to go until the event, I am thrilled that we have 74 exhibitors at the expo.  It was no surprise to me that this year was going to be a tough year dealing in a recruitment based industry.
  • Our two competitors had to cancel their events which has been great for me but very telling about the market. But, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – every body needs a job and every business needs staff – despite a recession and because of this we are about to have an incredibly fun and successful NZ Job Expo yet again.... :)
